Physical Sciences can be interesting and fun!
Newton’s Laws, the Doppler effect, intermolecular forces and collision theory – these theoretical concepts confuse many learners. This could explain why fewer and fewer South African learners are writing Physical Sciences examinations. Statistics show that over 13 000 fewer matric learners sat for the Physical Sciences Examination in 2017 compared to 20161. But, Physical Sciences doesn’t have to be difficult. It can be interesting and fun!
Physical Sciences is, unlike most other subjects, a skill and any skill, like driving a car or playing the piano, can only be obtained by practising. The more you practise, the better you get. Practice makes perfect! The Quanta Book series, for Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners, contains numerous questions on all the topics covered in Physical Sciences. The books provide learners with questions from National Examination Papers from 1990 to 2012 as well as examples from the Department of Education, which they can use to practise their skills. The books also contain step-by-step answers to all the questions, including the multiple choice questions.
One learner, Fourie Barnard, describes his success in using the Quanta Book series: "The questions from each unit deal with the topic thoroughly. If you've worked through all the questions, it's almost impossible for you to get a sum in the examination that is asked in an unfamiliar way". He added: "I would definitely think that it's a book that you would like to have with you all year round for practising and exam preparation."
The Quanta Book series is unique!
Many right-brained learners get bored in Science class or battle to understand the abstract concepts. The DVDs, which accompany the Grade 11 and 12 Quanta Books, contain cartoons, animations and demonstrations that enable right-brained learners to visualise difficult concepts. The Quanta Book series makes use of both the right and the left brain to accommodate different learning styles. The content is divided into small, digestible, bite-sized “quanta” with crisp explanations. Each “quantum” contains a concise and to-the-point summary of a specific topic, enriched with hints and tips.
