Do’s and don’ts of online learning

Not only is it a brand-new school year, but for those attending the Impaq Online School for the first time, it is also a brand-new way of learning. And, while you might know the ins and outs of what works in a physical classroom, online learning has a few rules of its own.

We asked our principal and online school teachers to share the do’s and don’ts of online class etiquette to help ensure you get the best experience possible. Here’s how to be the best virtual student:

Do

  • Ensure you have the technology you need to attend your online classes, i.e., laptop or PC, reliable internet connection, and sufficient data. Read about the minimum device and software requirements for the Impaq Online School here.
  • Test your technology before class starts to ensure everything works properly, including your monitor, headphones, and microphone. A functional camera and microphone are a requirement for attending classes and writing tests and examinations.
  • Prepare for your class beforehand to ensure you have a basic understanding of the material to be covered. This will allow you to participate in class and ask any questions you might have.
  • Remember to charge your laptop before class starts or simply leave it plugged in. If you are using a PC, make sure that you have a backup power supply in case of load shedding.
  • Join the session three (3) minutes before the class is set to start – not too early (or you’ll be waiting around) and not too late (or you might miss essential information).
  • Keep your camera on (unless otherwise indicated). Our teachers love seeing your face, and it also helps you to get to know your classmates!
  • Participate in class and chat with your fellow classmates. We encourage you to hold chats related to the subject at hand in the chat feature. You can use this feature to ask for help, provide a quick answer to a question or give feedback on a classmate’s point.
  • Ask questions by raising your digital hand.
  • Pay attention in class.
  • Work and attend class in a dedicated study space. This will help you get your head in the game.
  • Ensure you have everything you need, such as stationery, workbooks, lesson material, notebooks, etc., ready and available during class.
  • Check the Optimi Learning Portal at least once a day. Here, you will find additional crafted digital resources (videos, quizzes, etc.), assessment schedules, live subject guidance sessions, personalised calendars, and more.
  • Inform the other people in the household of your online class schedule and politely ask them not to disturb you during these times.

Don’t

  • Forget to check your background before class! Make sure that it is not distracting to other learners. Better yet, ask your teacher for the official Impaq Online School background to display during class.
  • Turn your microphone on (unless your teacher has given you permission to do so).
  • Multi-task while attending your online classes. Close internet tabs such as social media sites that might distract you, put your cellphone and gaming consoles away, and turn off the TV.
  • Make other learners uncomfortable by wearing inappropriate clothing. Instead, opt for attire you would typically wear when attending class in person, such as a nice t-shirt (you can still wear your comfy pants).
  • Eat during class time (unless medically necessary).
  • Take unnecessary bathroom breaks. Breaks will be provided during the school day.
  • Blame late or missed assignments on technical issues. Check that all your equipment is working ahead of completing any tasks. If you are experiencing technical difficulties, let your teacher know in advance and try to find an alternative way of submitting your work.
  • Be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are how we learn! Remember that there is no such thing as a silly question.

We look forward to an exciting year of online learning and can’t wait to see you in class!
